- The Sunlight Model — Designed for homeowners looking to shade a smaller area. Available in widths up to 24’ and a maximum projection of 10’. Retractable Awnings for Kansas City Decks
A retractable awning for a deck is the most common project we quote across the metro, and the right spec depends on how your deck is framed and which direction it faces. A Sunesta deck retractable awning mounts to the house wall or the deck rim, extends up to 14’8” over the boards with no front posts to trip over, and retracts flush when you want the open sky back. Because the dual-cable arm system carries the full projection off the wall, the seating area stays clear whether you have a 12-foot walkout deck or a 40-foot span across the back of the house.
- Deck Mounting Done Right — The deck fascia board is decorative and should never carry an awning. On composite decks built after 1998 (Trex or AZEK over a 2x10 PT pine joist), we pull the fascia, through-bolt the brackets directly to the rim joist with backing plates, then re-set the fascia with a routed pocket so the hardware disappears. On pre-1970 KC homes we through-bolt to the band joist rather than lag into cedar fascia. Every deck awning is anchored to framing, never to trim.
- West-Facing Decks and 4 p.m. Projection — Most KC-metro backyards point west, and a west-facing deck takes the worst sun from 3 p.m. to sunset. On a deck, projection matters more than width: a 16-foot awning at 11’6” of projection shades more usable deck than a 22-foot awning at 8’. We measure the shadow path on site and spec projection at 4 p.m. first, then go as wide as the wall allows. For low-angle sun after 6 p.m., add a SmartDrop front-drop valance to the front bar.
- Deck vs. Patio Wind Exposure — A raised deck sits in more open air than a ground-level patio, so wind exposure runs higher. We include a wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically at 28 mph; on bluff-edge decks above the Missouri River we set that threshold lower at 22 mph. Retracting during gust fronts is what protects the fabric and frame long term. Awnings over 30 sq ft on a wood-frame second story get a structural attachment review through the City of Kansas City, MO Codes Administration before we install.

This includes having multiple frame colors to choose from that will blend in with the exterior of your home. Unlike other awning manufacturers, we won’t make you settle for a white frame if your homes exterior has a clay tone to it. We custom design your awning to become part of your home!

With an array of patterns or solids for you to choose from, we can provide the perfect fabric to go with your home and awning frame color that you choose. Our heavy duty acrylic awning fabrics are the highest quality in the industry and are designed to resist fading. Our consultants can walk you through the entire process during our visit to your home and show you all of the fabric samples. There are a variety of options in Brown, Grey, Green, Blue and Red.
Professional Installation
All of our awnings are installed by highly skilled Sunesta certified installers. Our installation technicians are employees of our company. We will not use subcontractors under any circumstances. We pride ourselves on quality workmanship and we will clean up the jobsite before we leave. We also provide a one year workmanship warranty. The onsite technician will also walk you through on how to operate and maintain your new awning.
Standard Awning Features
- Wireless Motor — Sunesta retractable awnings are motorized and are operated with a simple push of a button on a wireless remote control.
- Manual Override — All of our awnings come equipped with a with a manual override so the awning can be hand operated in case of a power outage.
- Support Arms — Only Sunesta awnings come equipped with four heavy duty PVC protected cables.
- Mounting Options — The most common mounting options are our wall mount option or if you have a low clearance issue we can custom mount the awning onto the roof so you have enough space to enjoy under your newly crafted custom awning.
Custom Optional Awning Upgrades
- Smartcase — The Smartcase is our most popular custom add on feature. The Smartcase is heavy duty shell that encapsulates the deck fabric and provides 360 fabric protection when your awning is not in use. The Smartcase makes the awning complete and much more aesthetically pleasing when in use and not. It will protect the deck fabric from the elements and will ensure a longer lasting deck fabric for years to come. It also prevents any fading or unwanted wear and tear during all seasons. (Available in Sunesta and Sunstyle models only up to 24’ wide)
- Front Drop Screen — The front drop screen is a great option if your home has direct west or east exposure. This will cut down on the sun cutting underneath the awning during the sunset while you are enjoying a late evening dinner. The drop screen is built into the awnings front bar and is manually operated. The screen can be lowered a maximum of 60” depending on your specific needs. The screen fabric is available in two options of openess depending on the amount of sun blockage you desire. The drop screen is available in a variety of colors.
- Wind Sensor — The motion sensor is an extremely popular feature. It is retrofit to the front bar and is designed to sense high wind activity and will retract the awning automatically.
- Smart Hood — The solid one piece heavy duty aluminum cover is a nice upgrade to your awning to protect the top of the deck fabric from rain, snow or the sun.
- LED Lights — Dimmable lighting is a great add on feature that secures right to the awning arms. Perfect option for illuminating your deck or patio area at night.
